As Paul mentioned in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! earlier today, the tower at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI will again hold the title of World's Busiest Tower next week as 10,000 or so aircraft descend upon the field for AirVenture 2014.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

One of my favorite parts about AirVenture is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I even go so far as to download mp3 archives of the week's ATC so I can listen later on when I need an "Oshkosh" fix.

What makes the situation so unique at AirVenture is that there is such a huge volume of traffic, with communication between the tower and aircraft usually being one-way. On top of that, during high volume times, they are landing multiple planes at a time on the runway. To facilitate this, there are evenly-spaced colored dots painted on the runway as markers. You'll hear the tower say something like "high-wing Cessna, turn your base now, cleared to land orange dot."

Kinja'd!!!

"Dot" is a bit of an understatement.

What it amounts to is a virtual conveyor belt of aircraft lining up, landing, and taxiing.

If you want to hear a sample, I've posted a bit from last year !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , courtesy of LiveATC.

Years ago my uncles flew up in a Cessna, they ended up landing last in a train and had to clear off really fast so a B-52 could land immediately after they cleared the runway. Sadly no pictures (they were flying, after all), that would have been a sight to see a B-52 taxiing right behind a group of Cessnas.

It is a really nice view, and I miss getting to go. It is a lot of hard work!

Awesome, how many years have you been able to work the tower? Which airport do you normally work at?

I went in 09 and 10, I was selected to go in 11 and 12 but my boss couldn't let me go - "staffing problems". I didn't bother to apply last year or this year since we have fewer people working now than we did back then... I'm at GGG, Longview TRACON/TWR.
